Want to build a real Jurassic World? It’ll cost you $23 billion

Jurassic World

(From Daily Mail) Given their tendency to end in disaster, it is perhaps worth asking why anyone would want to build a Jurassic World-style theme park, but if you wanted to it would cost a cool $23 billion (£15 billion).

But anyone with that sort of cash lying around would also need to stump up another $11.9 billion (£7.6 billion) every year to keep the park running.

The totals were calculated by fans of the Jurassic Park franchise using real world costs.

They worked out that the real estate alone needed to house the prehistoric attractions wuld cost around $10 billion based on the original film.

The video, produced by the Jurassic Park Fansite channel on YouTube, also outlines what research and development would cost – with $7.9 million (£5 million) being needed for staff alone.

Based on the cost quoted by companies that currently do cloning work on dogs, the video estimates that it would cost $2.85 million to clone the dinosaurs.

However, this perhaps underestimates the real cost as the scientific techniques underpinning the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films – where fragments of dinosaur DNA are patched together using genetic information from modern frogs – has still to be successfully developed.

Potential dinosaur park owners would also face a significant outlay to obtain the amber which is used to extract DNA from mosquitoes encased within it.

The video estimates it would cost around $9 million (£5.7 million) to obtain the material.

It costs Disney more than $11.7 billion (£7.4 billion) a year to run its theme parks, so the fans estimate it would cost around the same to keep a dinosaur based theme park operating through the year.

They calculate it will cost around $32 million (£20.3 million) a day to keep Jurassic Park running plus an extra $207 million (£132 million) a year to pay for the food and welfare of the dinosaurs.
