(From New York Daily News) The aliens are back — and this time Will Smith isn’t around to stop them. The first official trailer for “Independence Day: Resurgence” was released and while several familiar faces return for the sequel, Smith is not one of them.
The film takes place 20 years after the original invasion depicted in the original 1996 sci-fi blockbuster, with the nations of Earth using recovered alien technology to strengthen the planet in order to thwart any future threats.
But the technology boost is no match for the aliens’ latest attack on the planet, which is even more massive in scope than the original.
Smith, whose character famously helped defeat the aliens in the first flick, chose not to return for “Resurgence.”
This time around, hotshot pilot Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth) is teaming up with scientist David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) to help stop the invaders.
“That is definitely bigger than the last one,” Levinson tells Hemsworth as they watch an alien spaceship overshadow Earth.
Besides Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch also reprise their roles in the sequel.
“Independence Day: Resurgence” invades theaters June 24, 2016.
