The Best Bikes of Marvel Universe

motors

Motorcycles and comics are two of this nation’s most recognizable icons, though you hardly ever see them together. Let’s be honest, when you see a guy riding down the street with leathers and a bandana on a custom hog, the odds of him having a graphic novel in the saddle bag are slim. Alternatively, the average comic fan is usually not a familiar face in the long distance poker run either.

But the truth is there is an overlap between the two iconic images; looking in just the universe of Marvel Comics, we can see several instances where motorcycles and superheroes go hand in hand:

Ghost Rider

Probably one of the most recognizable motorcycle riding comic characters today is the flaming skulled vigilante himself, Ghost Rider. While Ghost Rider has had several iterations throughout the years, the original and probably most recognizable being Johnny Blaze, the constant throughout the series has always been the motorcycle. Originally appearing in Marvel Spotlight #5, both rider and bike have undergone many transformations through the years, but the supernatural abilities, such as riding up the sides of buildings or over the top of water, has been with us always, as well as the always memorable trail of fire that follows wherever he rides.

Wolverine

Among the X-Men, the wild and rebellious spirit often associated with bikers seems to fit right in with Wolverine. While there aren’t many instances in the original comics that show him on a bike, the 2000 cinematic remake had several scenes, including the thrilling chase involving Wolverine fleeing an attack helicopter. While maybe not originally intended that way, the future of the bad boy of the mutant universe seems to fit right in on the back of a motorcycle.

Captain America

With his origins set in the WWII era, it was easy to put the easily recognizable Captain America on his very own custom bike. First appearing way back in 1941, the supercharged superhero quickly became a rallying flag for a nation on the brink of war. With his patriotic shield and heightened speed and strength, a motorcycle was the obvious choice for his mode of transportation, and he sported it with style. Even though the years may have modernized Steve Rogers and his outfit, the bike has always been a part of his image.

Black Widow

The recent news that Black Widow’s character in the upcoming Marvel’s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” will be cruising around on Harley Davidson’s first ever electric motorcycle, called Project LiveWire, has only fueled the collaboration of comics and bikes. For years fans have incorporated their love of the genre with the two-wheeled transports, creating not only one-of-a-kind choppers and gear, but also meticulously buying motorcycle parts and crafting replicas of bikes featured in Marvel comics and movies.

While we may not ever have the abilities of Captain America, or the supernatural powers of Ghost Rider, we can nevertheless respect the detail and care that went into creating their truly unique motorcycles and appreciate the effort and time that fans put into recreating those machines for us to see in the real world.
