Studio Ghibli adapts the world’s first Manga into a charming 30-second short


(From Lost at e Minor) Studio Ghibli has created an animated version of The Scrolls of Frolicking Animals, which is considered the oldest work of manga in history.

Manga is a broad term that refers to comic art created in Japan. The distinctive style that characterises Japanese comics developed from monochrome scrolls painted in the 12th and 13th centuries, and evolved to its current modern form under the cultural influence of the USA during the occupation of the late 1940s.

Chōjū-giga is believed to be the first example of manga. Also referred to as ‘The Scrolls of Frolicking Animals’, it was created in the late 12th century and is currently exhibited at the Kyoto national museum.
