‘South Park’ returns to games in ‘Stick of Truth’

South Park The Stick of Truth

(From USA Today) For fans of the animated series South Park curious whether the show’s crude humor could carry over into a video game, look no further than the gastrointestinal gymnastics on display from the kids of South Park Elementary.

In the role-playing game South Park: The Stick of Truth, it’s not a sword or shield that serves as your greatest weapon. It’s the ability to, ahem, fart.

The game, which looks identical to the style of the TV show, is a fantasy role-playing epic based at the school of stars Stan, Kyle and Cartman.

A demo shown during the Electronic Entertainment Expo begins with the player’s character, named Commander Douchebag, working with Butters to escape a cafeteria overrun by elves. Players will work with Cartman and company to snag the Stick of Truth from Clyde, who is bent on destroying the world.

The show’s humor is on full display during Stick of Truth, starting with the rampant passing of gas that serves as the game’s equivalent to magic. After cupping his hands to catch farts, the player tosses them to cause damage.

“No magic with the fan running,” shouts Butters. “You’ll kill us.”

Combat is turn-based, so players alternate turns with computer-controlled enemies they will encounter. The spells and abilities players use are comical, such as a lightning spell involving a bucket of water, jumper cables and a car battery, or the Flame Blast combining a can of hairspray and lighter. To restore mana, players must down burritos.

With each victory, players gather loot such as the Slashing Blade of the Ranger or the vibroblade, and gain power by adding friends from school on Facebook.

However, an epic duel between the player and Cartman reminds us of the stars during the Stick of Truth demo: the farts. Terence and Philip would be so proud.
