Pixar’s new projects

pixar movies

(From Geeks of Doom) Pixar had been regarded as a studio who could produce high quality original films. Then they dipped their toes into sequels, and for all the sequels they have made, only one can be considered the worst of not only the sequels, but of Pixar’s entire library itself.

While Monsters University is definitely a step in the right direction for the studio, after two softball films – Cars 2 and Brave, the film itself is a prequel.

But for fans who are worried that the studio is straying away from original content, Ed Catmull, the President of Pixar, said that the studio is hoping to do an original movie every single year, and sequels every other year.

Here’s what Catmull told Buzzfeed:

For artistic reasons … it’s really important that we do an original film a year. Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world — which is the rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren’t doing original films.

We’re going to have an original film every year, then every other year have a sequel to something. That’s the rough idea.

Based on Pixar’s schedule, Catmull’s statements ring true. We’ve got The Good Dinosaur coming in 2014, and Inside Out in 2015, both of which are original. The two will be followed by Finding Dory, the sequel to Finding Nemo, which also will open in 2015. Which means that the two projects to come after Finding Dory will most likely be original films.
