Obi-Wan Kenobi set to return in ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’

obi wan kenobi

(From Geeks of Doom) It’s only been a few days since we learned that Emperor Palpatine was rumored to return in Star Wars: Episode VII, and now we are hearing that another major character from the Star Wars universe is set to return, accept this character doesn’t follow the dark side of the Force.

Latino Review has the scoop that Ewan McGregor will return to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode VII. And like the rumored Emperor Palpatine, Obi-Wan will return as a Force ghost, something he has already done in Return of the Jedi. But his return may stir up some controversy within the Star Wars community.

Alec Guinness who played the original Obi-Wan, passed away in 2000. His appearance in Return of the Jedi remained untouched, even after some of the changes, like Hayden Christensen’s image replacing Sebastian Shaw’s as Anakin Skywalker in the 2004 DVD re-release of Return of the Jedi. This may be a touchy subject as fans weren’t all too pleased with the drastic change. But if this rumor is true, and either one of the characters are coming back, I think director J.J. Abrams and screenwriter Michael Arndt can pull it off.

The report also mentions that Disney is looking into an Obi-Wan standalone film. Details on that are light, but this does leave the door open for Christensen to return as Anakin Skywalker. All of this remains to be seen.

McGregor has been quite vocal about wanting to return to the Star Wars universe as Obi-Wan, and his character has been established in the minds of younger audiences through the Clone Wars animated show. So it makes plenty of sense that he get his own standalone film.
