Music to your ears: Smartphones that rock your hippocampus

How can a smartphone make your hippocampus happy? It’s an odd question, but only if you don’t know what a hippocampus is. The hippocampus is the part of your brain that connects to your emotional affairs. More interestingly, the hippocampus is the reacting center for music-evoked emotions. The sound of music is filtered through the hippocampus, which signals powerful emotions.

With today’s advanced technology, the quality of music reaching your ears is as available and mobile as it has ever been. Nearly two-thirds of all Americans own a smartphone, and as many as 64 percent of younger Americans use their smartphones as their main source for music. Thus, good sound quality is of high priority when it comes to smartphones for consumers. Samsung, for example, is working to enhance its mobile devices by teaming up with Scottish sound processing chip masters Wolfson, while Vivo has boasted DAC and amp chips seen more often in hi-fi systems. So, what are some of the best smartphones that can really rock your hippocampus today?

Samsung Galaxy S 6

Many Samsung Galaxy S 6 users are impressed with the entire package of the smartphone; however, its audio quality is noticeably better than the standard calling sound. This is especially true for WhatsApp voice calling. One of the greatest audio features in the Samsung Galaxy S 6 is its music player apps, such as SoundAlive, in which audiophiles can control the balance of the bass and treble or vocals and instrumental, and can manually adjust the 7-band equalizer. Adapt Sound allows users to tune the smartphone’s equalizer for better audio quality with the headphones being used, as well.

HTC One M9

The HTC One M9 smartphone is equipped with two BoomSound speakers that feature Dolby Audio technology, which help them provide crisp, clear and loud sound. Some critics also note that this phone has great output because the speakers are located on the front of the phone. Teamed with Dolby, the HTC One M9 boasts a 5.1 surround sound effect because it pumps out left and right channel sound for a more cinematic experience.

Sony Xperia Z2

The Sony Xperia Z2 has quickly gained a reputation for its strong media performance. Sony’s Walkman app and Music Unlimited service provide the superior sound audiophiles can expect from smartphones, offering the ability to adjust sound settings for each song through its ClearAudio+ feature. The smartphone’s dynamic normalizer is a sleek feature that monitors and adjusts each song you play so they all are on a similar level.

iPhone 6 Plus

The iPhone 6 Plus has been described as vibrant, clear and loud, which is good news for longtime iPhone users looking to upgrade. The maximum volume can fill a medium-sized room without the tinny, shallow sound many smartphones put out when at max volume. Although the speakers are located at the bottom of the phone, which can make video-watching difficult in landscape mode, the iPhone 6 can be placed on a desk or dresser and bellow out strong tunes that even your hippocampus can pick up in the next room.
