Metallica launch own label Blackened Recordings

(From The Guardian) Metallica have left their longtime record label, taking control of their back catalogue.

After decades with Warner Music, the metal band announced that they are to launch their own label, Blackened Recordings.

“It’s always been about control for us as a band,” drummer Lars Ulrich said.

Metallica appear to have acted on a clause of their joint venture agreement, signed with Warner in 1994, that allows them to reclaim their own material.

As of 30 November, Metallica own the rights to their master recordings, including the group’s complete discography and all long-form videos.

Soon every Metallica release, from Kill ‘Em All to Death Magnetic, will be stamped with the Blackened Recordings logo. The imprint will also oversee Metallica’s marketing and promotion, as well as “anything else that suits them”.

Metallica’s first independent release will be a concert DVD, Quebec Magnetic, due on Monday. The live set captures the band’s performances in Quebec City on 31 October and 1 November 2009.
