Live-action ‘Ghost In The Shell’ gets ‘Straight Outta Compton’ scribe for rewrite

(From Geeks of Doom) Thanks to Straight Outta Compton being the sleeper hit of 2015, the cast and creative team have been able to get some high-profile gigs. Jason Mitchell and Corey Hawkins both got starring roles in Kong: Skull Island, while director F. Gary Gray was confirmed for Furious 8.

Now, Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Jonathan Herman has been hired to do a rewrite on the Rupert Sanders-directed adaptation of the futuristic anime Ghost In The Shell.

Herman will be tasked with doing a major script overhaul, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who was the first to report on the story. It’s unclear what will happen to the previous drafts written by William Wheeler, Laeta Kalogridis, and Jamie Moss.

Here’s how THR describes the film,

In the film, Scarlett Johansson stars as a special ops cyborg who leads an elite task force called Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. Section 9 is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man, whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology.

The movie will be based on the popular manga and anime of the same name. The manga series was first launched in April 1989 and ran for a little over a year until November 1990. Sequels and subsequent collectors reissues were released the following years. Two animated films based on the original manga have been released, both directed by Mamoru Oshii.

The live-action version has been in the works for quite some time. Steven Spielberg first acquired the rights to the film in 2008. Earlier this year, Johansson signed on for the lead role, after Margot Robbie turned down the offer for it.

Herman is a relative newcomer to the industry, with Straight Outta Compton being his first major screenwriting credit. He is currently working on the draft of the new Scarface remake over at Universal, as well as scripts for The Demonologist and The Birds remake, both of which are also at Universal.

The trade also says that the film is scheduled to go into production in New Zealand in the first part of 2016. With that in mind, expect to hear some more casting announcements in the near future.

Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing. Michael Costigan, Jeffrey Silver, Tetsu Fujimura, and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa are executive producing.

Ghost In The Shell is set to be released on March 31, 2017.
