This is exactly the ground Japanese officials have decided to tread, as they’ve ‘hired’ virtual idol Hatsune Miku to be their ambassadress of local cuisine to foreign tourists.
The bold move was made by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF), as they launched the ‘Oishii Trip’ (Oishii means delicious), a new campaign welcoming tourists into the ever-widening world of Japanese food.
Miku, a creation of Crypton Future Media originally for the Yamaha Vocaloid 2 synthesizer, first came to prominence in 2007.
Her popularity has grown heaps over the last decade, and she now has over 45,000 followers on Instagram, a strong cosplay fanbase, and has performed as a projection in many venues around the world from the Theatre du Chatelet Opera House in Paris to the Late Show with David Letterman on American television.
