How to design the multi-purpose entertainment room for geeks & gamers

game room

The idea of creating a man cave for gaming has given way to a multifunctional entertainment room that everyone can enjoy, whether you’re a science nerd, gaming geek, technophile, bookworm or TV-watching fanatic. The smart family knows a space for gaming, along with other fun and intellectual pursuits, will become the heart of your happy home.

Psychology of Color

Like in optical illusions, the brain uses visual cues to create physiological beliefs. Ice blue will trick your brain into feeling cooler in the summer and reds heat you up. Other colors and textures elicit feelings associated with technology, nature or freedom. Before you start decorating your living room space, decide on the feeling that you want to create. When you have the mood to set, ask your family which colors represent that feeling. Use the consensus hue as your base or accent. Richer colors tend to work better on one wall as an accent. Subtler hues can be used throughout the room.

Right Light

Lighting and window placement have a profound effect on the look and energies of your room. Bold colors next to a large window may overpower. Paint a bold color on a wall with indirect lighting to create a more balanced ambience. In a gamer’s house, specific lighting is essential. Reflections off of a screen can distract game playing and create a glare on the TV screen. Yet, minimal light can cause eye strain. Achieve perfect lighting with custom woven wood blinds to let in just the right amount of natural light — while still obscuring the view from outside. Wooden blinds also lend a natural, eco-friendly aesthetic to the room for a nice mix of tech and alfresco flare.

Stylish, Functional Flooring

Give particular attention to flooring as an interior decorating feature. Strive for a mix of style and functionality. Carpeting, whether floor to floor shag or area rugs, add a softness to the room and give the family a place to spread out and read on a Kindle, play Xbox One or even nap. To make the room novel without going overboard, use a kitschy rug on a neutral carpet. And for the hardcore gamer? Decorate with throw rugs designed to look like pixelated versions of a game controller, Mario or a Pokémon ball.

Entertainment Lair

The sitting area of your living room can range from extreme gamers’ chairs to contemporary furniture. Your furniture scheme all depends on how geeked out you want to go. You can accent with a coffee table crafted to be a replica of the old Nintendo Entertainment System circa 1985. Add to that a few high-end gamers chairs like the X Rocker Wireless, and you have an amazing gaming living room. Offset the gaming theme with colorful geometric wall art or an eclectic clock to give the space modern personality. Bookshelves can soften the gaming-centric vibe and provide a space for book collections and knickknacks. Designate a corner of the living room near a window as the reading nook where the bookworm of the family can curl up and get lost in “Game of Thrones.”
