Hemingway, an app that will help you write like him

(From Lost at e Minor) “Hemingway”, is an app that helps you eliminate unnecessary word and problematic prose in your sentences. Whether you’re an aspiring New York Times bestselling author or just sending an email, just copy and paste your composition to see how Hemingway-esque you really are.

The app flags your writing crimes according to colour. Over-extended sentences are marked in yellow. Adverbs – those words that end in “ly” – are marked in blue. Complicated words are in purple. Green mean you are talking in the passive voice. And red means you are talking too much.

There’s also an Automated Readability Index, which scores your composition based on readability. This means that if you get a grade 10 score, your writing can more or less be understood by most adults. A score of grade 10 above means you need some writing lessons, or an editor.
