Harry Potter spin-off trilogy casting rumours

Eddie Redmayne

(From Den of Geek) Production is set to start before the year is out on the first film in the planned Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them trilogy. This is the first spin-off from the Harry Potter movies, and J K Rowling is penning the screenplays for the movies, based around her short Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them book. The new films will be set around 70 years prior to the Potter stories.

David Yates, who directed the final four Harry Potter movies, is on board to direct, and there’s the small matter of casting the lead character, Newt Scamander.

Matt Smith had been rumoured at one stage, but it looks like the frontrunner now is Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory Of Everything).

Whilst no official offer to the actor is believed to have been made, he’s reported to lead a shortlist that also includes X-Men and Mad Max: Fury Road star Nicholas Hoult.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on November 18th 2016.
