George Lucas is building a ‘Star Wars’ museum in Chicago

Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

(From Conde Nast Traveler) Star Wars fans have more than just a new movie to be excited about. Clearing the last zoning hurdle, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is officially coming to Chicago.

The 300,000-square-foot space will house Star Wars creator George Lucas’s own collection of movie memorabilia, including artwork, sets, and props from the SW franchise, as well as ephemera from other films.

Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, the museum will soon be neighbors with the Chicago Bears’ Soldier Field. Bears fans are fully on board, as the museum also baked in more parking and tailgating spots for fans, as well as public green space in its zoning plan.

Chicago may not seem like the obvious choice for Lucas and his film company, now owned by Disney—Skywalker Ranch, Lucasfilm’s legendary campus, is located in Marin, California, outside San Francisco. But after San Francisco officials declined to turn over land in the Presidio to museum development, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel began working some Yoda-style magic to move the museum to the hometown of Lucas’s wife, Mellody Hobson, a Chicago native.

Museum officials have said they could break ground on the futuristic-looking building as soon spring 2016, and could begin welcoming visitors in 2019.
