‘Game of Thrones’ will feature the largest battle in TV history

game-of-thrones-battle

(From Geek Nation) Game of Thrones has changed the way we look at television in a number of ways, both from a storytelling and production standpoint. The series has featured special effects to rival that of some blockbuster movies we’re seeing nowadays, and the battles have been on par with fantasy epics like Lord of the Rings.

Perhaps no other battle or sequence in the series though, rivals that of the final act in “Hardhome” last year, which featured a Whitewalker/undead attack on a Wildling outpost beyond the wall, that not only provided a whole slew of information on the coming war, but featured some of the most gorgeous and well-staged action moments in the show’s history.

It looks like the upcoming sixth season is going to try and top it though because while speaking with EW, producer and writer Bryan Cogman revealed that the new season will not only feature the biggest battle in the show’s history, but in television history as well:

“It’s definitely the biggest [action sequence yet]. We’ve always wanted to get to a place – story-wise and budget-wise and time-wise and resource-wise – where we would be able to do a proper battle, with one army on one side, one army on another side.”

In avoidance of any spoilers, the story didn’t reveal who the battle would feature or even when it would come in the season. However, showrunner David Benioff did reveal that it will be featured in an episode directed by Miguel Sapchnik, who helmed the previously-mentioned “Hardhome” as well:

“Miguel did such a fantastic job with ‘Hardhome’ we thought we should bring him back – this time with horses. Horses are not easy, at all. And certainly in terms of numbers – number of extras, number of stuntmen, number of shooting days – it’s the biggest we’ve done.”

Dan Weiss commented on their goals for the sequence, to give audiences their first look at a “proper” battle, that they don’t often see in either film or TV:

“We wondered, ‘Why don’t you see more fully fleshed-out battles in movies and TV? Then you get into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to actually shoot these things in a way that isn’t just helter-skelter chaos but actually gives you a sense of battle geography and the ebb and flow, and you realize why.”

Season 6 of Game of Thrones will premiere on HBO on April 24th.
