(From io9) One of the biggest events in Game of Thrones history before the events of the show is the “Dance of Dragons”—an epic two-year-long battle that saw Daenerys’ ancestors in House Targaryen nearly rip themselves apart in civil war. Scratching your head in confusion? Have no fear, HBO is here!
As part of the now-traditional yearly agonizing wait for the latest season of Game of Thrones to come out on DVD and Blu-ray, HBO have begun teasing some of the special features that will be part of the box set—and one is a big retelling of the events of the Dance of Dragons.
This wouldn’t be the first time the box sets have delved into Game of Thrones’ vast pre-show past for special features—but it’s definitely the series’ most elaborate attempt yet. Previously those featurettes were narrated by a single actor, and consisted of a piece of text read out over interspersed sketchy images as illustration, each only a handful of minutes long.
The exploration of the Dance of Dragons will not only be a whopping 20 minutes long, but will feature vocal talent from a vast array of Game of Thrones actors former and present, including Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell), Kerry Ingram (Shireen Baratheon), Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen), Mark Addy (Robert Baratheon), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) and Jack Gleeson (Joffrey Baratheon).
Although this isn’t the first time A Song of Ice and Fire fans have been able to learn about the Dance—it’s touched upon in the books, explored even further in the fantastic book A World of Ice and Fire, and Martin will return to it in Fire and Blood, a book entirely about the history of House Targaryen—it’s really cool to see a huge and intriguing part of the franchises’ history get an “official retelling,” even if only as a box set bonus.
Plus, you never know with Game of Thrones—this could be being included as some relevant backstory for future events. Better get brushed up on it just in case!
Game of Thrones Season 5 is out on Blu-Ray and DVD March 15th, which yes, still is an agonizingly long time away.
