Del Toro gives update on Pacific Rim sequel

concept art for pacific rim

(From Science Fiction) In the latest issue of Total Film, Guillermo del Toro was very open about his aliens vs. robots sci-fi epic movie, “Pacific Rim,” and not only shared some concept art but also gave an update about the progress of the film’s sequel.

The concept art was drawn by Doug Williams and is two of many more that are in the magazine.

The first illustration shows a Russian Jaeger seemingly standing guard over a city during winter.

It gives a great visual of how tall and foreboding the mechas can be!

Could this be the same Jaeger seen buried in the snow in the trailer?

The second piece of concept art is described as a “freaky Skull Temple that’s fused with its derelict urban surroundings.”

Not too sure much more than that but since they used the world “temple,” can it be assumed it is a church building of some sort?

Could the skull be from the remnants of a past battle with a Kaiju?

While “Pacific Rim” isn’t slated to drop in theaters until this summer, del Toro is already working on the script for the sequel and gave an update on its progress:

“Travis [Beacham, co-writer] and I have been working on it. We co-wrote the screenplay on this first one, and now we’re hard at work at doing the second one.

“We want to take however long it takes to really find out the idea and try to bridge something that really makes the mythology roll. And in the meantime, I’m going to shoot Crimson Peak, which is a ghost story.

“The great thing about Legendary [the studio] is they’re willing to take it to completion in the right way. They’re giving us the leeway. Imagine that we’re generating the comic book. We’re learning more about the [Pacific Rim] world we’re creating day by day.”
