Danny Boyle planning Trainspotting sequel for 2016

trainspotting

(From Entertainment Wise) Danny Boyle has named 2016 as the year he will unveil a sequel to his 1996 hit film Trainspotting.

The director, speaking at the SXSW Film Festival has revealed that screenwriter John Hodge is already working on a script based on author Irvine Welsh’s novel PORNO.

As well as Boyle, the cast of the original film are also thought to be returning for the follow-up with Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller, and Kelly Macdonald, all expected to reprise their roles.

The lead McGregor may cause a problem though, with the actor blaming studio interference for losing the lead role Boyle’s The Beach to Leonardo DiCaprio, with the star not working with Boyle and Hodge since.

Speaking about the project, Boyle said he expects everyone will return though: “This has been a long time coming. There’s always been this long term plan for Trainspotting 2, if John [Hodge] can produce a decent enough script, I don’t think there will be any barriers to Ewan [McGregor] or any of the cast coming back.”

“I think they’ll wanna know that the parts are good so they don’t feel like they are letting anyone down. The reason for doing it again is that people cherish the original, people remember it or have caught up with it if they never saw because they were younger. So you want to make sure you don’t disappoint people.”

The director added that the new film will be “very loosely based on PORNO. There’s a couple of things that are based on the book, but obviously we’d have to have Irvine [Welsh] on board.”

Despite the plans being well udnerway, Boyle said he’d like to wait until 2016 to release the film, marking the twenty year anniversary of Trainspotting: “Well, the ideal time would be PORNO in 2016. Because it was 1996 when Trainspotting came out. Twenty years, it’s like wow, where did that go.”
