Captain America statue dusted with comic book writer’s ashes

(From New York Post) He became one with a comic book and now he’s one with a statue – literally.

Legendary Marvel Comics editor and writer Mark Gruenwald who famously had his ashes mixed with printers ink for a paperback comic-book collection now had more of his remains sprinkled on the newly-unveiled Captain America statue in Prospect Park, thanks to his widow.

Catherine Schuller-Gruenwald, 62, of Manhattan scattered “two scoops of Gru” at the base of the 13-foot-tall statue following an unveiling ceremony in the park.

“With his extra ashes we dusted two scoops of Gru on the top of the sculpture,” Schuller-Gruenwald told the Post, adding that her late husband “threw himself into his work, literally.”

Schuller-Gruenwald, who attended the ceremony with her step-daughter Sara Gruenwald, 30, did not get permission to scatter the ashes and was even asked to stop by a security guard when she first attempted to sprinkle them.

“At first no one cared and then security came over. Obviously Marvel doesn’t want dead ashes on their property,” said Sara.

Mark Gruenwald, 43, died of a heart attack at his home in Pawling, NY 20 years ago.

Besides gaining popularity among his fans and colleagues, Gruenwald is best known for being mixed with the ink that produced a paperback collection of Squadron Supreme stories in 1997.

The 1-ton bronze statue – at the Children’s Corner, near the carousel – commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Brooklyn-born Steve Rogers character, better known as Captain America.

The statue will be in the park temporarily and will appear outside a new Bed Bath & Beyond in Sunset Park from late October through the end of the year.
