Ben Affleck to play Batman

batman vs superman

(From Den of Geek) Well, who saw this coming? Whilst Ben Affleck had been mooted as a potential director for the Justice League movie, his name hadn’t been linked with the role of Bruce Wayne and Batman. However, Warner Bros has now confirmed that Affleck is the man to take over from Christian Bale as the new big screen Batman.

He will take on the role in the Batman/Superman movie that was announced at San Diego Comic-Con last month. The film, a sequel to Man Of Steel, will be released on July 17th 2015, it’s now been confirmed.

Notwithstanding the fact that Batman is now back under the stewardship of an American actor, casting a 41 year old in the role does suggest that all concerned are making good on the fact that this won’t be another origin for the character.

We’re going to be seeing a middle-aged Bruce Wayne, and a middle-aged Batman. Furthermore, if Affleck keeps the role for a good decade or so, then that surely opens the door to explore some of the excellent comic books that deal with a more mature superhero. That, instantly, sounds really promising.

In the official Warner Bros announcement, Zack Snyder – who’s directing the Batman/Superman movie – said that “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry [Cavill]‘s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him”.
